Dr Monika Pradhan is an Ophthalmologist and Cataract surgeon with subspecialist proficiency in Medical and Surgical Retina and Uveitis. She is one of New Zealand’s only three female Vitreoretinal surgeons. She strives to deliver personalised eye care which is always in the best interests of her patients.

Monika is dedicated to providing the latest treatments for retinal diseases, either with medical or surgical interventions. She uses ultramodern technology in her clinics and operating facilities. She has a warm and empathetic approach to her patients and their families.

Originally from India, she has now lived in Auckland for nearly two decades. She is multilingual and is fluent in English, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati.


Dr Monika Pradhan provides expertise in:

Training:

  • Monika completed her training in medicine and postgraduate studies in Ophthalmology with the University of Mumbai and the prestigious King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, which is the largest public tertiary referral centre in all of Western India. She obtained the Master of Surgery in Ophthalmology degree, Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery and the Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay.

  • After moving to the UK in 2003, she underwent further training in Ophthalmology and obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of London.

  • Subsequently she relocated to Auckland and undertook subspecialist fellowship training in Ocular Genetics, Medical Retina and Uveitis and Vitreoretinal surgery.

  • She has been awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists

  • Monika has an exceptional academic background, obtaining Gold Medals in several ophthalmic examinations, including the DOMS exams in India and the Combie Medal and Harcourt Prize for highest grades worldwide in the MRCOphth exams in London.

  • She has also recently been made a Fellow of the American Society of Retina Specialists


Work activities:

Monika has published in several international journals, given lectures at national and international conferences and been involved in research projects investigating various aspects of inherited eye disorders, diabetic retinopathy and the association between diabetes and corneal and peripheral neuropathy.

She is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Greenlane Clinical Centre and the Manukau Superclinic where she also teaches Vitreoretinal and Medical Retina Fellows, registrars and medical students. She has a close relationship with the University of Auckland Ophthalmology department, through which she maintains her research interests, in addition to her clinical work.

Personal life:

Monika devotes her spare time to her two children and pet dogs. She loves music, reading, going to concerts or the ballet and travelling.
